Grandparents Day Gift Ideas
Every year, on the Sunday after Labor Day, Grandparents Day is celebrated in the United States. As the story goes, the holiday was first suggested to President Nixon in 1969 in a letter written by a 9-year child advocating for a day to celebrate Grandparents.
Officially, Grandparents Day was proclaimed to be a national holiday by President Carter in 1978. The purpose of the holiday is to honor grandparents and to appreciate the guidance and wisdom they can give to younger generations.
As Carter stated, "Grandparents are our continuing tie to the near-past, to the events and beliefs and experiences that so strongly affect our lives and the world around us. Whether they are our own or surrogate grandparents who fill some of the gaps in our mobile society, our senior generation also provides our society a link to our national heritage and traditions."
The English teacher in me loves the symbolism behind the choice of September as the month to celebrate Grandparents Day. As the first month of fall, September represents the "autumn" of life, a time when many people find themselves to be grandparents.
